Welcome to my blog, Get Busy Gardening! My name is Amy and I live and garden in Minneapolis, MN, USA zone 4b.
I started this blog in 2009 so I could share my gardening experiences, tips, tricks and ideas with others.
I love all types of gardening, indoor and outdoor; including perennials, annuals, tropicals, veggies, houseplants, succulents and even water gardening. If it involves gardening, you'll find it here.
I am a Software Developer by day, but my true passion is gardening – which I indulge in whenever possible. I've been gardening much of my life, and get my green thumb from my parents.
I am also a freelance garden writer, and an experienced gardening professional. I write a regular gardening column that appears in seven newspapers published by Southwest Newspapers. I've also written content for Dockside Minnesota magazine and The Dirt newsletter. Most recently, I was chosen by Troy-Bilt as a member of their Saturday6 garden bloggers team. I'm always helping friends and family with garden planning, design and plant identification. I've started doing consultations for other as well, and hope to grow my experience in this area. Since purchasing our house in 2002, I have transformed our boring suburban yard into a garden oasis by adding several flower gardens, a large vegetable garden, a tropical garden, a rain garden, two ponds, and many unique hardscape features. Although my husband is not an avid gardener, he gives me a never ending supply of support and manual labor. He has come up with many wonderful design ideas that we’ve incorporated into our landscape, and his projects have turned out beautifully.
During the long winter months I turn to indoor gardening, tending to my large collection of houseplants, succulents and tropical plants. It’s a lot of work, but I love being surrounded by green foliage and blooming plants year round - especially during our long Midwest winters.
My philosophy on gardening is that it is a learning experiment. I learn by doing, and I experiment with plants and gardening all the time. My goal is to encourage others to do the same, anyone can be a gardener.
