Yesterday people were outside without jackets, and this morning the birds were happily chirping as I walked into work.
I don't remember a January where it was this mild; we're breaking all kinds of records.
Maybe Mother Nature feels guilty about being so cruel to us last year.
Last winter was exactly the opposite, it was the worse winter we've had in a long time.

Travel was a nightmare, many of my daily commutes were 4-5 times longer than usual.
Yep, it was pretty miserable.

Compared to this year...
Well, so far this year, we've had less than a foot of measurable snow in Minneapolis... and most of that has melted.
Wow!

Speaking of last winter - I was browsing through my blog archive, and I came across one I wrote on December 18th, 2010.
This was written a week after our first blizzard of the season.
In that post, I shared a bunch of pictures of my gardens after the blizzard.

I took similar shots to the ones in last years blog post (and put them in the same order), so you could see the difference.
So take a moment to compare the pictures in today's post with the pictures in this post... Winter Gardens After the Blizzard.
Let me know what you think - it really is crazy how different this winter is from last year.
P.S. If winter was like this every year, I wouldn't dislike it so much!
P.P.S. Some of the landmarks have changed, don't let that throw you off in your comparison.

Winter here in Memphis has been very mild too. We hit 68 degrees today. I took advantage of the warmer temps and gusty winds and used my clothesline for the first time since October! the kids played outside all day too, they were thrilled to not be cooped up in the house!

Wow, 68 degrees!! That is fantastic. We're not close to that, but I'll take anything above freezing this time of year. It has been a great winter, but hopefully it won't come back to bite us this summer!

I posted two or three times already this winter on the weird weather we're having (in Eastern North Dakota). It looks like we're finally in "normal" winter mode, though I wish it would snow more so I could break out the cross country skis and snowshoes.
ReplyDeleteFunny, it seems like the weirdness is happening nation wide. Winter hasn't quite hit us yet, but they keep saying it will. It's supposed to get cold this week, but up in the 40s again this weekend. Snow would be nice, but only because we need the precipitation (I'm not an outdoors person in the winter). :-) Good luck, hope you get your snow soon!

I agree that we need a nice winter after last one! 53 degrees in Jan I'll take it! The weather station said Nov 15 is when we had our first snow storm last year. I remember the snow stayed until late spring. Hmm...maybe that wasn't the best year to tear up our lawn and expand our garden. It took so long for all the snow to melt and then it was really cold and rainy everyday after that. http://theurbanhomestaed.blogspot.com/2011/04/digging-up-our-lawn-and-turning-it-into.html I might do a post or at least take pictures of our garden now too. It helps to remember the extremes we can get.
ReplyDeleteWow, Nov 15... I forgot it was so early!! YUCK! I remember running around the yard frantically trying to get the last few things done before it snowed; and thinking I was happy I did because the snow stayed until spring.
DeleteYou should try making a lasagna garden in your new garden space... Lasagna Gardening I'm trying it for the first time this year. You know, you could still get out there and do it now since we have no snow!! :-)

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI am a new follower of your blog from Southwest Wisconsin, and have had similar weather to you. Up until the last couple days that is. We have been so spoiled that it makes hard to handle these cold temps once they arrive!
Hi, welcome to my blog and thanks for the follow! We were in Mexico when the recent cold weather and snow hit MN, so we were lucky to miss it. But we're back to reality now... and what a shock!! You're right, we have been spoiled this winter. Good thing it's almost Feb!
