| Some succulents |
I thought it was kind of funny, because I just got done repotting a bunch of my houseplants.
Well, it also got me thinking... after dividing and repotting several of my houseplants, I have a bunch of extras.
And that means I can share those extras with you!!
So, I'm going to have a contest to see who I will get to share my plants with.
I have a large variety of common houseplants, as well as a variety of succulents and tropicals in my collection. The prize will include cuttings and divisions from a variety of these plants. I will get a small box and see how many I can fit into it for you.
| A bunch of my houseplants |
I'll give you two weeks to enter the contest (deadline is Friday, September 9th at midnight central). You can enter your name in the drawing more than once.
Here are all the ways you can enter...
- Leave a comment here and tell me what your favorite houseplant is (or type of houseplant), and what's #1 on your wishlist.
- Write a blog post about your favorite houseplant, or something houseplant related, and post the link here in the comments. (make sure to include a link back to this blog post on your blog post mentioning my contest)
- Become a new follower of my blog
- Like me on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/GetBusyGardening)
- Start following me on Twitter (GetBusyGardenin - yes without the last 'g')
In two weeks, I will draw a winner randomly using random.org (heck, I might even pick two winners!) and the lucky winner(s) will get a box full of houseplants. I will select what's included in the box, but I will try to take suggestions into consideration if I have the plant you're looking for.
If you live outside of the Continental US, you can't win the plants (unfortunately), but feel free to include a blog post if you want to write one.
So tell your friends, tell your family, tell you neighbors! And enter the contest now.

I grow all sorts of plants and I'm afraid I can't decide on what my number one is. I grow spider plants, wandering jew, orchid cactus, succulents, orchids, banana. gardenia, bromeliads and cactus. I love them all :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun contest! My favorite houseplants are my spider plants because I can easily give away baby plants to my friends.
ReplyDeleteI added myself as a new follower, but also wanted to chime in that my favorite houseplant is the ficus benjimana. Even though they can be finicky and will drop leaves from a gust of cool air, they're worth it. It's always nice to find fellow bloggers in the neighborhood (I'm just around the corner in Grand Forks, North Dakota).
ReplyDeleteI'm a religious reader of Mr. Subjunctive's work on PATSP, and his post about your giveaway sent me in your direction. I recently (four days ago) re-relocated from Saudi Arabia back to Washington DC, and because of that re-movement, my reduced plant collection became even smaller. I'm hopeful some of my two dozen cuttings will survive the trauma, but I feel strange having so few plants after being used to devoting dozens of square feet to my 200+ plant collection. I'm a gardening addict without much to garden, at the moment!
ReplyDeleteI had started becoming a fan of succulents in past months, especially Stapelia, Duvallia, and Huernia, as well as bromeliads like Hechtia, Dyckia, and Cryptanthus. One of the plants I miss the most in my indoor apartment garden is my banana, however (but I just bought some seeds for Musa 'Manipur,' so I hope to have a plant in the next year or two!).
What a fun post! Love it! I liked your Facebook Page :)
ReplyDelete@gardentiki - I completely understand, it's so difficult to choose a favorite!! Sounds like you have a great collection.
ReplyDelete@Kim - I love spider plants too, some people think they're too common but I could never eliminate spiders from my collection! :-)
@El Gaucho - Welcome and thank you for the follow. Yes, you're not too far away!
@Kenneth - Wow, you brought cuttings all the way from Saudi Arabia!?! That's amazing, I hope they will survive for you too! It must have been so hard to give up your plant collection, I can't imagine. But now you get to build it back up again, which will be a ton of fun!! :-) Succulents are my favorites and I love the bananas too. Good choices! Trading on the GardenWeb is a great way to build up your collection fast and inexpensively. Good luck!
@NHGarden - thanks!!
I also follow Mr. Subjunctive on PATSP. I have ~40 spring-summer-fall outdoor and winter indoor plants, and another ~20 permanently houseplants.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite type are the succulents, and I've been lusting after a Haworthia truncata for a while, but I also REALLY want a Zamia furfuracea and wouldn't at all mind a Gymnocalycium ragonesei ;).
My most favoritest houseplant, though, is my Spath (Peace Lily) that I bought when I was first getting into plants about 4 1/2 years ago.
Oh, I forgot you wanted an email address - it's q a z t h o r n (a) yahoo if you can convert that into a real address (take out the spaces, put in the right symbol, etc :)!
ReplyDeleteI'm just now getting into gardening- outside and inside... the only houseplant I have right now is a dracaena marginata. I love it! There are so many on my wish list- too many to name, purple wandering jew is pretty high up there, Sansevieria trifasciata is as well!
ReplyDelete"liked" you on Facebook as well
ReplyDelete@Emily - I love succulents too! I put a bunch of my plants outside during the summer as well. It's a big job, but the plants do so awesome outside! Wow, you've got some cool plants on your wish list. Peace Lily is a good solid plant for any collection! I love mine too, especially when it's blooming. Thanks for including your email address.
ReplyDelete@Lauren - I can imagine how big your wish list must be with only one plant so far. You will have so much fun building your collection!! Thanks for the "like" too! :-)

I noticed you have the lantern style lights in your picture. My husband and I are contemplating purchasing that style of lights (I think they look cute) I was wondering how they have held up when it snows? Where we plan to have ours will have heavy banks of snow in the winter.
ReplyDeleteyour garden is absolutly beautiful.. I would love to win.. I have had plants since I was 10 years old .. I just turned 50 and have been living in a tiny apt so I had to downsize on my plants .. I have just moved into a bigger apt and I am facing the west . So now I get tons of light .. I saw that you have what I call a Moses in a Cradle.. I had one of those years ago.. I am trying to build my plant collection back up.. Its going ok .. I used to have over 150 house plants I think I am down to 14... thanks for this awesome oppertunity.. and again your plants and Gardens are lovely...garagedweller88@yahoo.com... my name is Tina
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog thanks to the "plants are the strangest people" blog. I'm always looking for more plant interest blogs to follow. Sharing plants is such a great thing. My gf and I are always trying to root things to share when they get out of control and starting plants from seed. I'd have to say I'm partial to orchids... The flowers are so beautiful and intricate. I'd say passion flower plants are up there too, but here in NC it's mostly an outside plant even though I bring it in during winter just in case. I also liked you on facebook and am following you on Twitter... Looking forward to all the plant filled updates!
ReplyDeleteStay well

Another follower of PATSP now following you! I added you via blogger and would like to be entered. :) My email is pynkrayne at yahoo dot com.
ReplyDeleteAs far as my current houseplants, I'm really just getting started! I've got a few orchids and violets on my bedroom windowsill and keep the half dozen spider plants down in the living area. I live with some roommates who are usually pretty good about watering when I'm gone but tend to overwater some of my more delicate plants. Ideally I'd like to be able to put most new things downstairs with a few select elite in my room but that's if I win. Here's hoping!
One of the best things about houseplants...sharing with your friends! I have tons of houseplants. And it is hard to chose my favorite. I guess right know its a Plumeria, that is in bloom. But I have tons of succulents, tropicals, orchids, and ferns. The next plant I would like to get would be a Aeonium or a Dudleya.
ReplyDelete@Julie - The lantern lights are ok. I've had them for probably 5+ years and none of them have gone out yet. But they are pretty rusty and I was considering replacing them. They stay outside year round, and we get lots of snow. They are next to the walkway and driveway, so they are usually burred all winter. I just got them at Target, they aren't anything fancy. I'm sure you could find higher quality ones that may last longer. If the lantern part comes off, you could store them inside for winter, that also will help them last longer. I just got lazy with these (I have too much other stuff going on in the fall :-)
ReplyDelete@Tina - Thank you! Wow, you also have gone through the difficulty of downsizing your plant collection. That must have been hard. But now you get the fun of building it back up again!
@Nik - Thanks for all the follows! Propagating plants and starting them from seed are such fun hobbies, but sometimes they grow your collection too fast (speaking from experience here)!! I love sharing my plants with others. I'm pretty sure everyone I know owns a plant from me, and they always tell me how they're doing too. Love it!! I love orchids too.
@Sasha - Thanks for the follow! It sure is nice of your roommates to water for you, hopefully they didn't kill anything with their kindness! :-)
@Rcstampyd - Totally agree! LOL, my favorite plant changes all the time too!
Amy
I'd be interested in any spider plants, cacti, and jade. My cat ate most of my spider plant before I moved it to a safer location. I also love cacti and jade because they're kitty safe and I can keep them outdoors in Los Angeles weather! :)
ReplyDelete@Megan, welcome to the contest. My cat eats the spider plants too, but doesn't really bother any of my other plants. He's tried chewing on a few others, but they must not taste as good as the spider. Lucky you to live in L.A. I sure wish I could keep my houseplants outside year round!
ReplyDeleteAmy
@Amy, Thanks! I think I've found a spot where my orange omnivore can't get to my poor spider. I need to get some cat repellant!
ReplyDeleteFound this through gardenweb!
ReplyDeleteAnyway my favorite houseplant is my hoya KQ, (about to bloom for the VERY FIRST TIME) and the highest on my wishlist is pretty much all other hoyas, especially serpens and chelsea. I love succulents too, and anything strange. :)
oh yeah, the things I did. I followed you on twitter and this blog, I liked you on facebook, and I posted a comment above. And my email address is okirun @ gmail . com
ReplyDelete:)
@Megan - I used Sour Apple on power cords when my cats were babies, that stopped them from chewing on the cords. But I'm not sure if that would be good to put on a plant or not.
ReplyDelete@nk - Glad you found this! Thanks for the likes and follows!! I love hoyas too, I haven't had blooms yet on mine, lucky you! Very exciting!!
Amy
My favorite plant is the corn plant! I have one that is nearly 6 feet tall. My next plant on my wish list, is a christmas cactus, or a Thanksgiving cactus. Either one would do! :o)
ReplyDeleteI am a new follower of your blog!!
ReplyDeleteI am also a "fan" on facebook!
ReplyDeleteI'm now following your blog and your Twitter. I am also a fan on Facebook. :)
ReplyDelete@mariann - thanks for all the likes and follows! The corn plant is a nice one, I've had one in my collection for so many years I can't even remember where I got it. :-) I love the holiday cactus' too, great choice!
ReplyDelete@Megan - thanks to you too for all the likes and follows!!
Hello! Thank you for the opportunity to win some of your awesome plants! I am an new follower of your blog, and I liked your page on fb! My favorite type of houseplant is a jade, but I am unsuccessful growing them so far! I'm excited to find out if I win, and to learn more about houseplant care! My email addy is creationsbycarm@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHi Creations by Carm - welcome to the contest!! Thanks for signing up. I love jade too. It took me a few years to figure out how to get it to grow huge, and I almost lost it once because I over watered it. But now it's one of my favorites, and one of the healthiest plants in my collection!! Thanks for the likes and follows!
ReplyDeleteAmy
Favorite houseplant is the Norfolk Island Pine (yes, I'm aware it is actually a tree, naturally).
ReplyDelete#1 on wishlist is the swiss cheese plant. yes, I know I'm boring...
@Jeff - welcome to the contest. You're not boring! Some of my favorite plants are the most common of houseplants. Most of my plants are trees, bushes, or other perennial plants in warmer climates. I'm sure people who live in those climates would laugh if they came into my house during winter! :-)
ReplyDeleteAmy
I found and now am a follower of your blog on blogger, and liked you on fb. I have a lonely old pothos that has seen better days. I've invested all my time and effort outside and now need some plants inside to help clean the air. As well as repot my pothos with a lighter mix.
ReplyDelete@FranksGreenGirl - Sorry but the contest is over. I should have posted a comment here to say that before. Good luck with your pothos. I can totally relate to spending more time outside than inside during the summer! My plants stuck in the house are pretty neglected in the summer. :-)
ReplyDeleteHey everyone, here is the link to the winners page... Winner's of the free houseplants giveaway

ReplyDeleteHi Joanne! Thanks for entering the contest. This post is actually from last year's contest. It's funny... I saw that I had a comment from you, but didn't see it on the current post. It took me a little while to figure out what was going on, (I thought there was something weird with Blogger). :-) Too funny. Could you do me a favor and enter your comment on this year's post? It'll be much easier to track that way. Here's the link... http://www.getbusygardening.com/2012/08/free-houseplant-giveaway.html
