Thanks to everyone who has participated in the contest for free seeds so far! I'm excited to see all of the winter sowers out there and hear about what's being sown!! The running total of containers sown by you so far is:
44
Outstanding!! You have until 9pm CST tomorrow (Tuesday February 22nd) to enter the contest, there are multiple ways to win (even if you're not winter sowing!). At that time, I will draw a name randomly via random.com and pick a winner. If you miss this one, don't worry, I'll have a few more drawings throughout the winter sowing season.
Keep those winter sowing number coming (even if you don't want to enter the contest)! This is fun!

Wow, that's alot of winter sowing! We sowed 8 more containers here for a total of 22. We are planning on sowing big sunflowers too in hopes of doing a "sunflower forest" for the kids. Last year, critters dug up and ate all the seeds we direct seeded. I was thinking of doing 1-2 seeds in big plastic cups instead of a bunch in the jugs for easier planting. How well do they transplant? Interesting doing carrots, maybe we should w/s those instead of waiting to direct seed. Here in Chicagoland, ours barely matured before winter hit! In fact, I'm sure there's still some in the ground. We got tired of waiting on a harvest! Regards, Michele
ReplyDeleteMichele, Wow, 8 more containers, you have been busy. It's been slow going for me, but hopefully I'll catch up to you soon! :-) I have had great success winter sowing sunflowers. As soon as they sprout, take the lids off and move them into full sun (re-cover or bring container in at night if there's a threat of frost). They grow leggy pretty fast if they don't get enough sun. Then when you put them in the garden, put chicken wire or something around them to keep the rabbits from eating until they get bigger. The first year I planted my sunflower seedlings and they were all eaten the next morning! All that work just to feed the darn rabbits!! Yes, carrots do great with winter sowing! They are the last thing I harvest in the fall and I always have a ton!

Thanks Amy, those are great tips. So glad to hear the sunflowers did well. Maybe I will do them in the jugs instead, so I can open and move them easier. A little fencing will be perfect to contain that kids' area anyways. After I posted, I was thinking we may try to w/s the carrots in a deep plastic container and try it as a container garden. Our soil was probably some of the problem. We're going to work hard this year amending/improving it, as I've never composted before. Another goal this summer.
ReplyDeleteYou're so welcome! Yes, soil is very important for quality vegetables. It took me a few years to learn that! Check out this post I wrote last year about composting. Composting Made Easy and Cheap Once you start doing it, you'll see the benefits. The stuff that grows by my compost bin gets huge!

Amy, I've never thought of using those containers before! I can't believe it! I'll have to whip a few out since I just ran out of milk jugs. :) Great idea & yes, I just LOVE wintersowing. I'm getting ready to do some veggies here soon.
ReplyDeleteHi Hanni,
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog! Isn't it fun to get ideas from others. I love it and also love seeing what others are winter sowing! Keep us updated on the progress of your sowing and your container counts if you have time (I'll be doing a few more free seed giveaways too if you want to enter the contests). I will definitely be following your progress. Happy sowing!!
